2. Michelson Interferometer A research group at CSUSB is using a Michelson Interferometer to calibrate an affordable scanning tunneling microscope that they are inventing. If the movable mirror in a Michelson Interferometer is moved through a distance distance of 0.233 mm, a shift of 792 bright fringes occurs. What is the wavelength of the light producing the fringe pattern? a. b. If a thin film of index of refraction n 1.40 is placed in one arm of a Michelson interferometer, perpendicular to the optical path. This produces of shift of 7 bright fringes. The wavelength of the light used in the interferometer is 589 nm. How thick is the film?

Explanation / Answer

Ans:

1)The path difference between the two paths is 2(d2 –d1). This has to increase by for a shift of one fringe.

Here the path difference is d2-d1=.233mm and Number of fringes shifted is 792.

So, 2(.233 mm)=792 , Therefore =588nm

2) Given Refractive index of the thin film is n=1.40

Number of fringes shifted is N=7

Let the thickness of the film is t

then the relation between n,N,t and is N=2(n-1)t gives t=N/(2(n-1))

So the thickness of the film is t=5.145 micro meter
