Question
INTO MANCHESTER Q1 Researchers investigated the effect of cyanide on oxygen uptake by mitochondria. They prepared a suspension of mitochondria from animal cells and a suspension of containing mitochondria from plant cells. They placed the suspensions in separate flasks isotonic solution, started the timer and began recording the concentration of oxygen in each flask. After 5 minutes, they added a respiratory substrate and ADP to each flask. After 13 minutes, they added cyanide solution to each flask. The graph below shows their results. From P to R the curves for animal and plant mitochondria overlap. Respiratory substrate and ADP added Cyanide solution Animal mitochondria oxygen Plant mitochondria Timel minutes (a) Explain the line between P and Q. (2) (b) Explain the line between Q and R.Explanation / Answer
Exp for (a)
Line PQ shows constant oxygen conc. With respect time as no oxygen gets converted into water.
Exp (b)
Q and R means decrease in oxygen conc. as ATP is formed and oxygen gets converted into water.
Exp:- ii
The other substance are inorganic phosphate ( Pi).
Exp:- C
R to S and R to T the former in case of animal mitochondria is inhibition of cytochrome oxidase by cyanide so no oxygen gets cosumed and water is not formed oxygen conc. remains constant along the line R to S. Whereas in plant mitochondria thy show cyanide resistant respiration still continue oxygen consumption in presence of cyanide anfld form hydrogen peroxide lot energy is produced as heat instead of ATP.
