Question

2 Turntable A small coin is placed on a flat, horizontal turntable. The turntable rotates at a constant rate, and is observed to make 6 rotations in 3.14 s (a) What is the speed of the coin if it rides without slipping at a distance of 5.0 cm from the center of the turntable? (b) What is the acceleration (magnitude and direction) of the coin in part (a)? (c) The coin has a mass of 2.5 g. What is the frictional force acting on the coin in part (a)? (d) What is the coefficient of static friction between the coin and the turntable if the coin is observed to slide off the turntable when it is more than 10 cm from the center of the turntable?

Explanation / Answer

(A) w = 6 x 2pi rad / 3.14 sec = 12 rad/s

v = w r = 12 x 0.05 =0.6 m/s

(B) a = v^2 / r = 7.2 m/s^2

(C) f = m a = (2.5 x 10^-3)(7.2) = 0.018 N

(D) f = (0.0025) (12^2 x 0.10) = 0.036 N

and f = u N = u m g

u = 1.47
