Question

I

Please help.. I dont understand why the direction of the force on the 3rd wire is pointed "down" because the right hand rule points in the upwards direction.

I also dont understand why the magnitude of the force on the second wire is zero. thanks in advance!

Explanation / Answer

solution to first query

as the current in the wires 1 and 3 are in the same direciton so they will attract each other, that is force on 3rd wire due to first wire will be upwards. Now the current in the wires 2 and 3 are in opposite directions so they will repel each other ,that is force on 3 will be downwards due to 2nd wire.SInce the second wire is closer than first wire,so force due to 2nd wire will be more than the 1st wire.So net force on 3rd will be downwards

solution to second query

force on 2nd wire due to 1st wire will be downwards and force on 2nd wire due to 3rd wire will be upwards. As the magnitude of currents flowing in all is same and also the distance between the wires 1 and 2 is equal to distance between the wires 2 and 3 .So magnitude of force between 1 and 2 and 2 and 3 are equal

so net force on 2nd will be zero
