Question

Would love to see work as I am confused about how to do. Problem 8.91 Part A Two friends, Burt and Ernie, are standing at opposite ends of a uniform log that is floating in a lake. The log is 3.6 m long and has mass 210 kg Burt has mass 26.0 kg and Ernie has mass 32.0 kg Relative to the shore, what distance has the log moved by the time Emie reaches Burt? Neglect any horizontal force that the water exerts on the log and assume that neither Burt nor Emie falls ff the log Express your answer to two significant figures and include the appropriate units. Initially the log and the two friends are at rest relative to the shore. Burt then offers Emie a pet it cookie, and Ermie walks to Burt's end of the log to Value Units Submit My Answers Give Up Continue

Explanation / Answer

let burt be at the left end initially and let this point be the origin

Initially center of mass is at

(26*0 + 210*1.8 + 32*3.6)/(26+210+32) = 1.840 m from left end

after ernie walks the center of mass is at

((26+32)*0 + 210*1.8)/ (268)= 1.410 m from the left end

hence the log moved, 1.840-1.410 = 0.43 m
