Question

What are the three longest wavelengths for standing sound waves in a 146-cm-long tube under the following conditions.

Not sure what I messed up. for an open closed tube is subm is 4L/m.

sub1=(4*1.46)/1 = 5.84

sub1=(4*1.46)/2 = 2.92

sub1=(4*1.46)/3 = 1.95

why is my answer wrong?

Nevermind, it's because the answer for the 2nd and 3rd need to be sub2=(4*1.46)/3 = 1.95 and

sub3=(4*1.46)/5 = 1.168

Apparently, you must use odd numbered values of m for open-closed tubes.

Problem 17.14 - Enhanced - with Feedback Correct What are the three longest wavelengths for standing sound waves in a 146-c-long tube under the following conditions. Here we learn how to find wavelengths for standing waves in a tube open at both ends if we know their wavelengths. Term 3: Significant Figures Feedback: Your answer .9733 m was either rounded differently or used a different number of significant figures than required for this part. If you need this result for any later calculation in this item, keep all the digits and round as the final step before submitting your answer. You may want to review (pages 464-467) Part B The tube is open at one end, closed at the other? Enter your answers in descending order separated by commas 1, 2-,-15.84, 2.92, 1.95 Submit My Answers ive Up Incorrect: Try Again; 7 attempts remaining You have found the incorrect value for the second and third wavelengths. Recall that the boundary condition states that on the open end of the tube, there must be an antinode and on the closed end, there must be a node of the standing wave's profile. Draw all three standing wave's profiles that fulfill this condition.

Explanation / Answer

(b) open at one end, closed at the other
longest 146*4 cm = 5.84 m
second longest 146*4/3 cm = 1.95 m
third longest 146*4/5 cm = 1.17 m
