Question

150 of a You hang by your hands from a tree limb height d- 1.8 m above the ground, as shown in the figure (not to scale). You then let yourself fall. You absorb the shock by bending your knees, ending up momentarily at rest in a crouched position with your center of mass a height b 0.4 m above the ground. Your mass is M - 58 kg. You will need to draw labeled physics diagrams for the various stages in the process that is a height L-3.9 m above the ground, with your center of mass a height h 2.9 m above the ground and your feet a (b) What is your speed v at the instant when your feet first touch the ground? X m/s (c) What the Earth is only Mg·568 N; you notice the unusually big force on your feet.)

Explanation / Answer

(a)

Eint = (h-b)*mg

= (2.9-0.4)(58)(9.8) = 1421 J

(b)

d*mg =1/2*mv^2

=> v = sqrt (2dg)

= sqrt (2*1.8*9.8) = 5.94 m/s

(c)

This force is due to the quick change in momentum.

F = m(v - u) / t

We have to estimate t. Let's say t = 0.5s.

F = 58 x (0 – 5.94) / 0.5 = -689 N (The negative sign indicates that the direction of this force is opposite to that of the velocity.)
