Question

8. -12 points My Notes Ask Your Teacl About once every 30 minutes, a geyser known as Old Faceful projects water 18.0 m straight up into the air. Use g=9.80 m/s, and take atmospheric pressure to be 101.3 kPa. The density of water is 1000 kg/m3 (a) What is the speed of the water when it emerges from the ground? m/s (b) Assuming the water travels to the surface through a narrow crack that extends 9.00 m below the surface, and that the water comes from a chamber with a large cross-sectional area, what is the pressure in the chamber? kPa Additional Materials Section 9-8: Fluid Dynamics

Explanation / Answer

a) v = sqrt(2*g*h)

= sqrt(2*9.8*18)

= 18.8 m/s

b) use Bernoullis equation

P1 + rho*g*h1 + (1/2)*rho*v1^2 = P2 + rho*g*h2 + (1/2)*rho*v2^2

P1 + rho*g*h1 = Patm + rho*g*h2 + (1/2)*rho*v1^2

P1 = Patm + rho*g*(h2 - h1) + (1/2)*rho*v2^2

= Patm - rho*g*h + (1/2)*rho*v2^2

= 101.3*10^3 - 1000*9.8*9 + (1/2)*1000*18.8^2

= 190 kPa
