Question
Activity 9A-1 1. The momentum vs. time graph for a 5.0 kg Px (kg m/s) object is shown on the graph to the right. Three points in time (a, b, and c) are shown for reference. For these graphs use the convention that the positive direction is to the right. a. At time 0, in what direction is the object 30- 20 moving? Explain how you know this. 10 012 | 014 0,6 0,8 10 b. At time1.0 s, in what direction is the object moving? Explain how you know this. -10 At which of the points shown (a, b, or c) is the net force acting on the object the strongest? Explain how you know this. c. d. Estimate the magnitude of the average net force that acts on the object.Explanation / Answer
1)Direction of momentum is same as that of velocity.
a)We see that at t = 0, P = 30 kg-m/s
The momentum remains constant along Y for t = 0 to 0.6 s
Hence, the object is moving in y direction.
b)At t = 1 s, the momentum is still positive so is the velocity so it continue to move in +y direction
c)The net force is strongest at a since at that time the object has maximum momentum
d)Impulse = F x t = m (v2 - v1)
F = Delta P/t
F = (5 - 30)/1 = -25 N
