Question

PLEASE HELP WITH PART B

Item 16 Part A A spring has an unstretched length of 11 cm . It exerts a restoring force F when stretched to a length of 13 cm For what total stretched length of the spring is its restoring force 3F? Express your answer using two significant figures. 1= 17 cm Submit My Answers Give Up Correct Part B At what compressed length is the restoring force 2F? Explanation / Answer

Force exerted by a spring is give by:

F = -kx

And the -k is the spring constant, which is not changing

As stated in the problem, a Force (F) is exerted when the spring is stretched x distance from equilibrium, so this means that:

F = -k(13 - 11)

F = -k(2)

If the F is increased, what must be done to the other side ofthe equation to maintain the eqaulity:

F = -k(2)

If the force is multiplied by 3, then the distance must be multiplied by 3, so:

3F = -k(2)(3)

3F = -k(6) ----> must be stretched 6 cm or to a length of 17 cm

For thre compression, same concept:

F = -k(2)

2F = -k(2)(2)

2F = -k(4) ----> must be compressed 4 cm, and the spring length will be 11cm - 4 cm = 7 cm
