Question

Questions 14 and 15 pertain to the following: Two thin lenses, one a diverging lens, are separated by 1.00m along th magnitude of the focal length of the 25cm, w the diverging lens is 40cm. An object 8.25cm tall is placed 35cm to the left of the converging lens. converging lens and the other a same principal axis, as shown in the figure. The converging lens is 25cm, while the magnitude of the focal length of Object 1.00m 35 em 14.) [4 roints] Where is the final image produced by this combination of lenses? (Give your answer relative to the diverging lens.) a.) 9.5cm to the left b.) 9.5cm to the right c.). 50.8cm to the left d.) 50.8cm to the right e.) 33.0cm to the right 15.) [4 points] Which of the following accurately describes the final image produced by this combination of lenses? a.) real image having magnification of +1.9 b.) virtual image having magnification of +3.8 c.) real image having magnification of -3.8 d.) virtual image having magnification of -3.8 e.) virtual image having magnification of-1.9

Explanation / Answer

for converging lens,

p1 = 35 cm

f1 = 25 cm

1/f = 1/p + 1/q

1/25 = 1/35 + 1/q1

q1 = 87.5 cm right to the converging lens.

this will work as object for diverging lens.

p2 = 100 - 87.5 = 12.5 cm

f2 = - 40 cm

1/-40 = 1/12.5 + 1/q2

q2 = - 9.5 cm

14. Ans: (a) 9.5 cm to the left

15. m = (q2/p2)(q1/p1)

m = - 1.9
