Question
1. An air conditioner for a single room uses about 1,300 W when it is running. To keep a room at a reasonable temperature, it does not have to run all the time. (If it did, it might get very cold in your room!) Assume that the air conditioner runs 25% of the time (i.e., for every hour that you have it turned on, the AC runs 15 minutes.)
If you leave your air conditioner turned on for 8 hours in a day, and if electricity costs $0.10 per kWh, then how much does it cost to run your air conditioner per day?
Explanation / Answer
since Ac works for 25% time ,then out of the 8 hours ,25% time means 15*8 = 120 minutes = 2 hours
1 kWh = 3.6*10^6 J
cost of each joule is $ 0.1 /( 3.6*10^6) = $ 2.78*10^-8
1300 W means 1300 Joules per second
then each second it costs 1300*$ 2.78*10^-8 = $ 3.62*10^-5
then for 120minutes ,cost is $ 3.62*10^-5*120*60 = $ 0.26
hence the answer is $ 0.26
