Question
7-34. A pendulum bob of mass m is initially at a vertical distance y above a table. After it is released, it swings to a lowest point, at distance ½ above the table, and then almost to its initial height y on the other side. (a) By how much does the bob's PE at its highest point exceed its PE at its lowest point? its lowest point? bob is 1.0 kg, the highest point is 72 cm above the table, and (b) What is the kinetic energy of the bob as it passes through y1 32 (c) Calculate answers to the above questions if the mass of the the lowest point is 31 cm above the table.Explanation / Answer
a) PE1 - PE2 = mg (y1-y2)
b) KE2 = PE1+KE1-PE2 = 0 + mg (y1-y2)
C) PE exceeds at highest point by = 1*9.8*(0.72-0.31) = 4.018 J
KE at lowest point = 4.012 J
