Topic - Physics for my Child - 6 FULL SENTENCES REQUIRED - Use Words and TYPED ONLY
Instructions: USE the Physics concept of the phenomenin of electric charge to answer the following: (6 SENTENCES MINIMUM)
Through the magic of time travel, you find yourself sitting around the table with Thales of Miletus (from 600 BC), Charles François du Fay (from 1733), and Benjamin Franklin (from 1748). You all have a babble fish in your ear that translates any language.
Thales was one of the first to report the phenomenon of electric charge. He found that rubbing amber with fur made it attract hairs and tiny bits of straw:
a) Charles du Fay - 2 SENTENCES MINIMUM
Charles du Fay proposed two ‘electrical fluids’, resinous fluid (from rubbing amber with fur) and
vitreous fluid (from rubbing glass with silk). Have Charles du Fay explain to Thales the properties of
the two ‘fluids’.
b) Ben Franklin - 2 SENTENCES MINIMUM
Ben Franklin proposed a single ‘electrical fluid’ to replace du Fay’s two fluids but still explain the
same phenomona. Have Franklin explain to du Fay how his single fluid model is (1) different, (2)
better, and (3) how the Law of Conservation of Charge works based on his model.
c) Electrical Fluid - 2 SENTENCES MINIMUM
Finally, based on modern knowledge, you know what the ‘electrical fluid’ actually is. Explain to Franklin what
the fluid is and how his model was wrong.
Explanation / Answer
a) According to Charles du Fay,electricity comprised of two fluids that could flow through solid bodies - namely resinous and vitreous fluid. Resinous fluid carries positive charge and vitreous fluid carries negative charge. If these two fluids come in contact with each other, they will produce a neutral charge. Also, resinous fluid will attract a vitreous fluid and vice versa. However, they will repel the fluids of the same type.
b) According to Franklin, electricity was assumed to be an invisible fluid. If in a body excess amount of this fluid is present, it contains positive charge and if a body has a deficiency of this fluid, the body contains negative charge. On the basis of this theory, electric fluid was assumed to flow from the body with excess fluid to the body with fluid deficiency.
c) Electric fluid can be considered to be a flow of electric charge through a metallic conductor.
