Explanation / Answer

Let M = mass of the heavier skater, m = mass of the lighter skater

V = velocity of the heavier skater, v = velocity of the lighter skater

To find M and m, divide the given weights by the acceleration due to gravity which is 9.8 m/s2

M = 74 kg, m = 66.33 kg

using law of conservation of momentum:

0 = MV + mv

-MV = mv

v = -MV/m = - 1.78 m/s

Kinetic Energy = (1/2) m v2

Total Kinetic Energy = (1/2) M V2 + (1/2) m v2

Total KE = 200.33 J

Energy comes from the work done by the skaters. They both apply a force over a certain distance (length of their arms)
