Question

Sapling Learning Map Four objects having varied masses are initially at rest at different heights above the ground. The masses and starting heights are given in the table below. Each mass is al negligible. Rank the kinetic energy and speed with which each object hits the ground,from highest to lowest allowed to fall to the g Object # | Mass (grams) 762 | Height (meters) 17.6 27.2 12.3 32.6 316 381 Most Kinetic Energy Highest Speed Lowest Speed . Explanation / Answer

Total Energy = Kinetic Energy + potential Energy

When the objects are at rest at a given height then,

Total Energy = potential Energy

(as Kinetic Energy = 0.5 * m * v2 = 0 as at rest v = 0)

Potential Energy is given by,

P.E. = mgh

for First object,

P.E.1 = 0.762 * 9.8 * 17.6 = 131.42976 J

for second object,

P.E.2= 0.417 * 9.8 * 27.2= 111.15552 J

for third object,

P.E.3= 0.316 * 9.8 * 12.3= 38.09064 J

for fourth object,

P.E.4= 0.381* 9.8 * 32.6= 121.72188 J

P.E.1 > P.E.4 > P.E.2 > P.E.3

Since when the body reaches ground its total potential energy is converted into Kinetic energy the order of kineticcenergy would be same as potential energy

K.E.1 > K.E.4 >K .E.2 > K.E.3

Also K.E. = 0.5*m*v2

v 2= 2 K.E / m

v21 = 344.93

v22 = 533.09

v23 = 241.07

v24 = 638.95

v24 > v22 > v21 > v23
