Question

Brief Explanation Please.

D. The gravitational potential energy of a system:

1. is always positive.

2. is always negative.

3. can be negative or positive.

E. A ball is connected to a light spring suspended vertically as shown. When pulled downward from its equilibrium position and released, the ball oscillates up and down. In the system of the ball, the spring, and the Earth, what forms of energy are there during the motion?

1. kinetic and elastic potential

2. kinetic and gravitational potential

3. kinetic, elastic potential, and gravitational potential

4. elastic potential and gravitational potential

Explanation / Answer

D) Gravitational potential of a system is defined to be 0 at infinite distance from the system. Thus at all the definable points the potential is less than 0 as the gravity force is attractive. Also as the mass is always a positive quantity, the gravitational potential energy is always negative.

E) As the ball oscillates, its vertical position changes changing its gravitational potential enrgy. Also the velocity of ball oscillates changing its kinetic energy , and the deformation of the spring changes due to oscillations of the ball changing the elastic potential energy.

Thus, kinetic, elastic potential ,and gravitational potential energies are involved during the oscillations.
