Question

Darth Maul has stacked a bunch of cases of beans onto a wood pallet (you can assume that the pallet itself has negligible mass).

Each case of beans is a cube of length L and the mass of each case of beans is the same.

Darth maul wants you to find the center of mass of the 10 cases of beans shown in the picture below in the horizontal plane. (i.e. in the both the x and y directions): (Use the following as necessary: L, measured from the back left corner.) from the left from the back

Explanation / Answer

Taking all distances from left as x coordinates,
X coordinate of center of5 boxes = L/2
X coordinate of cenetr of3 boxes = 3L/2
X coordinate of center of 2 boxes = 5L/2
X coordinate of center of mass = ( 5(L/2) + 3(3L/2) + 2(5L/2) ) / 10 = 1.2L
Taking distance from back as y coordinates

Y coordinate of center of 7 boxes = L/2
Y coordinate of center of 2 boxes = 3L/2
Y coordinate of cneter of 1 boxe = 5L/2
Y coordinate of center of mass = ( 7(L/2) + 2(3L/2) + 1(5L/2) ) / 10 = 0.9L

Hence center of mass of cases is 1.2L from left and 0.9L from back.
