Suddenly, they push away from each other. Immediately after separation, the first skydiver (who has a mass of 89.30 kg) has the following velocity components (with straight down" corresponding to the positive z-axis); Yu=5.430 m/s 3.750 m/s -63.10 m/s 1,2 What are the x- and y-components of the velocity of the second skydiver, whose mass is 57.70 kg. immediately after separation? Number m/s 2.x Number m/s What is the change in kinetic energy of the system? Number Joules Next Exit Previous O Check Answer Hint

Explanation / Answer

(a) Here,

v2x = 5.43 m/s * 89.30 / 57.7 = 8.40 m/s

(b) v2y = 3.75 m/s * 89.30 /57.7 = 5.80 m/s

(c) Change in kinetic energy for the second skydiver -

v2z = 58.3 m/s

KEi = ½ * 57.7kg * (63.10 m/s)² = 114869 J

And, KEf = ½ * 57.7kg * (63.1² + 8.4² + 5.8²) m²/s² = 117876 J

Therefore change in the kinetic energy = KEf - KEi

= 117876 - 114869 = 3007 J
