Question
1. Write a paragraph describing whether the statement is correct or incorrect and provide a short explanation (of 3-5 sentences) of why it is correct or incorrect. Your answer should address each component of the statement, demonstrate your understanding of the physiological concepts underlying the statement and be written professionally.
During dehydration a decrease in MAP leads to afferent arteriole constriction, and an increase in GFR.
2. Write a paragraph of 3-5 sentences to answer the following question. Your answer should demonstrate an understanding of the important physiological terms and concepts in the question, and be thoughtfully and professionally written.
David goes in for his annual checkup. His urine sample reveals high amounts of glucose in the urine. His doctor sends him home with a clean bill of health. Do you agree or disagree? Using your knowledge of glucose filtration, reabsorption, and secretion, explain how David’s renal handling of glucose is the same as or different from a healthy individual's.
Explanation / Answer
1) is true. It is important to have stable GFR for proper renal function.During dehydration, excessive fluid loss occurs that leads to low BP and lowering of MAP. Then comes the sympathetic nervous system to rescue. This lowering of MAP in ateries is detected by arterial baroreceptors which activate sympathetic nervous system. This leads to constriction of aterioles, GFR is increased to required rate.
2 is false. David is not healthy. He may be suffering from renal glucosuria or diabetes. Renal glucosuria occurs due to failure of renal tubular reabsorption of glucose and pass it on to urine. His glucose handling is different from normal patient.
