Question
I want to check if the data are correct. Especially for the system total. I just sum 10+15= 25, 6.3+18.9= 25.2 Therefore 0.2 is the final result??? I am not sure if it is correct.
And the momentum was conserved or not? if so, what is the evidence for it? I should give logical evidence using the data table for making a conclusion.
Thanks!
Before Collision After Collision Momentum Red Cart ___1___ kg × ___10___ m/s = ___10___ kg•m/s ___1___ kg × ___6.3___ m/s = ___6.3___ kg•m/s -3.7 kg*m/s Blue Cart ___3___ kg × ___5___ m/s = ___15___ kg•m/s ___3___ kg × ___6.3___ m/s = ___18.9___ kg•m/s 3.9 kg*m/s System Total 25??? 25.2??? 0.2???Explanation / Answer
Momentum is always conserved whether the collision is elastic or not.
So, in the 'total' row, 0.2 should not be there.
It should be ZERO.
I think in the column,'after collision', the velocity after collision is not correct.
You have mentioned the velocity of both the carts as equal and 6.3 m/s.
The case sould be both the carts move with same velocity.
Now solve this -
Initial momentum, Pi = 25 kg.m/s
After collision velocity = v (assume)
so, v = 25 / (1+3) = 6.25 m/s.
So, velocity of each cart after the collision should be 6.25 m/s.
So after collision, red cart - momentum = 1 x 6.25 = 6.25 kg.m/s
blue cart - momentum = 3 x 6.25 = 18.75 kg.m/s
So, difference of momentum = (6.25 + 18.75) - 25 = 0
I hope you understand the solution.
