Question
3 (14 points total) You are given four resistors. RI is 2.0 ohm. R2 is 4.0 ohm, and R3 is 6.0 ohm, and R4 is 8.0 ohms. You also have an ideal 20.0 V battery Using one, two, or three of the resistors, answer the following questions. Your must use at least one resistor, and you can use a resistor only once. a) (8 pts) Using the battery and one, two, or three of the resistors, draw a circuit that has the lowest resistance. Clearly indicate the resistors used. Calculate this resistance. b) (6 pts) Using the battery and one, two, or three of the resistors, draw a circuit that has the highest resistance. Clearly indicate the resistors used. Calculate this resistance. RI 2. osfExplanation / Answer
a) We are supposed to get minimum resistance possible. This can be achieved by connecting resistors in parallel. Since we can use three resistors maximum, and need to achive minimum resistance,we should connect three resistors in parallel.
To achieve minimum total resistance,we should connect resistors of lowest values in parallel.
therefore, the resistors that should be connected in parallel are resistors R1,R2 and R3.
Resistance of circuit = R=1/[(1/R1)+(1/R2)+(1/R3)] = 1/[(1/2)+(1/4)+(1/6)] = 1.09 Ohms
b) To achive maximum resistance in circuit ,we should three resistors of maximum magnitude in series. The resistors that should be connected in series are R2,R3 and R4
Total resistabce of circuit = R2+R3+R4 = 4+6+8=189 Ohms
