Question

Ephram Brown recently moved with his family to Colorado. He is disappointed to have left cosmopolitan New York City behind, but he takes solace in walking outside in the Colorado wilderness. During his walks, he has collected various bacteria, plant, and animal specimens. What type of structures of the cells of these organisms would he be able to observe with and without the aid of a compound light microscope at school? What could he do to improve his ability to observe cells? Bright Abbott has, in general, struggled in school. He is fortunate to get some help from Andy Brown, the new doctor in town. Bright has been having particular trouble understanding cell division. What should Andy tell Bright so that he understands the two types of cell division and the differences and similarities between the two types of cell division. During her time dating Ephram Brown, Amy Abbott stopped participating in many of her hobbies. After their break up, which is quite sad, she decides to take up biology. One of the first experiments that she wants to conduct is to investigate various conditions under which photosynthesis and cellular respiration are affected in plants Describe an experiment Amy can undertake to examine these processes. Delia Brown is looking to find a horse from a particular breed, a Shetland pony. Unfortunately, the pedigree information for the horses at the stable in town was recently destroyed in a fire. What process could Delia use to determine the ancestry, and therefore breed, of the horses she is interested in? Please describe this process so she understands how to conduct it. Small town doctor Harold Abbott wants to design a quick test to look for the presence of large quantities of monosaccharides, polysaccharides, or amino acids that may be present in some of his patients. What are some tests Dr. Abbott should examine, and why? What should Dr. Abbott look for during the results to see if patients have high quantities of these macromolecules? Colin Hart recently woke up from a coma, thanks to help of Andy Brown. Now that Colin is awake again, he wants to get back one of his favorite hobbies, lichen investigations, with his sister, Laynie. Colin is having trouble remembering information since waking up from the coma, so please help him figure out some good places to look for lichens on trees in Colorado. Which side of trees should have the greatest abundance of lichens? What about the greatest species diversity? Why?

Explanation / Answer

1. You cannot see the bacteria , vacuoles , chloroplast , nucleus of plant and animal cells without the microscope.

The bacterial outer wall and cytoplasm can be seen in compound microscope.

Plant vacuoles, cytoplasm , nucleus , chloroplasts are seeen through compound microscope.

The lenses should be changed for improving the magnification to view the particular object and to view clearly.

2. There are 2 types of cell division . One is mitosis and the other meiosis.. Mitosis takes place in cell that produce skin, blood, bone etc . Meiosis takes place in cells that produce gametes which forms offsprings upon fertilisation.

Mitosis divides the cell into two. Meiosis divides a cell into 4.

3. The gross rate of photosynthesis and respiration can be measured using floating disc procedure experiment.

4. She should do test cross with that horse she has to find the genotype of that horse.

A test cross is done to an individual whose genotypes are unknown. In this process a recessive individual is crossed with unknown genotype individual. From the resulting offsprings you can predict the genotype of the unknown individual and also its ancestors.

5.Barfoed's test for monosaccharides

Occurence of Red precipitate shows the presence of Barfoed's test.

Molisch’s Test for polysaccharides

purple condensation product shows presence of polysaccharides.

Ninhydrin test - for aminoacids

Purple color shows presence of aminoacid .

6. Lichens grow all over the tree. It is found where the sunlight doesnt fall on the tree . For northern hemisphere regions north side of the tree can be seen for lichen growth. Some species grow directly on rocks, some on bare soil, and others on the bark of tree trunks and branches.
