Question

PRE-LABORATORY QUESTIONS You do not need to do each of the five pre-lab questions every week. The assigned pre-lab questions are posted on TED. The figure shows a position vs. time graph for a moving object. At which exact lettered point or points: (Please do not include ranges such as "from A to B") 1. a) Is the object slowing down? b) Is the object turning around? c) Is the object speeding up? d) Is the object momentarily stationary? e) Is the object moving to the left (i.e. negative x)? f) Is the object moving to the right (i.e. positive x)? g) Is the object moving the fastest?

Explanation / Answer

From the given position-time graph we can conclude that the object is

(a) Slowing down at points A and E as it begins at higher velocity and ends at lower velocity with negative acceleration.

(b) Turning around at point B as position reaches a maximum and then starts decreasing.

(c) Speeding up at point C as the curved line shows the acceleration.

(d) Momentarily stationary at point B as the slope at this point is horizontal, implying velocity to be zero.

(e) Moving to the left at points D and E as the graph is in -x direction.

(f) Moving to the right at points A, B and C as the graph is in +x direction.

(g) Moving fastest at point D as before this point the object is speeding up and after this point object is slowing down.
