Question

A 200-turn rectangular coil having dimensions of 3.0 cm by 6.0 cm is placed in a uniform magnetic field of magnitude 0.81 T (a) Find the current in the coil if the maximum torque exerted on it by the magnetic field is 0.14 N·m. (b) Find the magnitude of the torque on the coil when the magnetic field makes an angle of 25° with the normal to the plane of the coi Need Help? If the kinetic energy of the electron is 4.70 × 10-19 J, find the speed of the electron and the radius of the circular path. (a) the speed of the electron m/s (b) the radius of the circular path um Need Help?

Explanation / Answer

a)

B = magnetic field = 0.285 T

m = mass of electron = 9.1 x 10-31 kg

Given that :

Kinetic energy = 4.70 x 10-19

(0.5) m v2 = 4.70 x 10-19

(0.5) (9.1 x 10-31) v2 = 4.70 x 10-19

v = speed of electron = 1.02 x 106 m/s

b)

r = radius of the electron path

using the equation

r = mv/(qB)

r = (9.1 x 10-31) (1.02 x 106)/((1.6 x 10-19) (0.285)) = 2.04 x 10-5 m = 20.4 um
