Question

A stadent set up the magnetic optical bench as shown. The locations of the component holders for the crossed aow target (CAT), and screen (S), are as follows, respectively: 228 mm, 825 mm and the offset for lens, Lis 6.00 mm. The inverted The offsers for the CAT and the S are 4.00 mm, image formed on the screen is 0.750 times the size of the object (a) What is the position of the CAT on the optical bench? (b) What is the position of the S on the optical bench? (c) Calcelate the position of the component holder of the lens? (d) What is the rosition of the L on the optical beach? (e) Calculate the object distance from the lens, () Calculate the image distance from the lens. (g) Calculate the focal length of the lens.

Explanation / Answer

from the given data

a. position of CAT on optical bench = position of CAT component holder - offset

position of CAT = 228 - 4 = 224 mm

b. position of S = position of component holder - offset

position of S = 825 - 4 = 821 mm

c. posiiton of compoennt holder for lens = ?

let distance between CAT and L be x

then

object distance u = -x

image distance = (821 - 224) - x = 597 - x

from magnification

v/u = -0.75

(597 - x)/x = 0.75

597 - x = 0.75x

x = 341.142 mm

hence position of L on optical bench = 224 + x = 565.14 mm

hence position of component holder assuming offset = 565.14 + 6 = 571.14 mm

d. position of L = 565.14 mm
