Using the pool of equations provided:

You are out hunting for Thanksgiving dinner one morning when you spot the prize bird flying across the sky (assume turkeys are good flyers). Being of sure aim, you nail the bird and it falls out of the air. When the 10.5 kg bird is 6.2 m above the ground, it is moving at a speed of 7 m/s. Calculate the turkey’s kinetic energy and speed just before hitting the ground. Recall that turkeys are immune to air resistance.

Explanation / Answer

given

m = 10.5 kg bird

h = 6.2 m above the ground

v = it is moving at a speed of 7 m/s

the kinetic energy is KE = 1/2 m v2

KE = 0.5 X 10.5 X 72

then the kinetic energy is KE = 257.25 J

and the speed just before hitting the ground is V

the KE = 1/2 m V2

PE = m g h

then 1/2 m V2 = m g h

V = ( 2 g h )1/2

V = ( 2 X 9.8 X 6.2 )1/2

V = 11.0236 m/sec

the speed just before hitting the ground is V = 11.0236 m/sec
