PHYSICS 131 - Quiz 9.a Naime Student ID provided on each sheet. If you run out of room for an answer, continue on ihe lxack. 1. One possible zero-emission automobile technology is to use energy stored in a rotating flywheel. Suppose such a car has a total mass of 1000 kg, uses a uniform cylindrical flywheel of diameter 1.5 m and mass 240 kg ( 67.5 kg m2), and should be able to travel 400 km without a "spi-up". Assuming the car has an average retarding force of 500 N, what is the "full charge" angular velocity of the fly wheel?

Explanation / Answer

in travelling, energy is used working against the retarding force .

so flywheel must contain the energy, that is sufficient to work against the retarding force.

W = F.d = (500 N) (400 x 10^3 m ) = 2 x 10^8 J

KE stored = I w^2 / 2

2 x 10^8 = 67.5 w^2 / 2

w = 2434.3 rad/s
