Page Tools Objective: nics - Eid AL Aurelio Pose J 26,2016 @1021 AM Driving Question How is the total linear momentum and kinetic energy of a two-object system affected by a collision? Experimentally demonstrate that linear momentum and kinetic energy are conserved in an elastic collision, and that linear momentum is conserved but kinetic energy is not conserved in an inelastic collision. Aurelio Paez Jul 26, 2018 @10:13 AM MOT Design and Conduct your Experiment: It is your group's responsibility to design and conduct an experiment whose data will support your answer to the driving question above. Answer the guiding questions below to help guide you during your experiment design. After you have answered the guiding questions, write an outline of the equipment setup and procedure you will use to collect data. Please be sure to identify the steps in sequence and identify when each piece of equipment will be used Guiding Questions: F7

Explanation / Answer

in a two object collision, the total momentum of the system is conserved
i.e. total momentum before and after the collision of the two bodies is the same
this arises from the fact that during collision the force experienced by each object is due to the other object and hence while considering both objectsd as part of the system, this is an internal force
and hence in the absence of any external force, the momentum of the system is conserved

in case of elastic collsiion, there is no waste of energy
i.e. total KE of the system before collision = total KE of the system after collsiion

to verify this using an experiment
we need two billiard balls and 4 photogates
we send the two balls towards each other, having two photogates each dedicated to measure speed of each ball seperately
after the collision, the balls move back opposite to their previous velocities
this speed is also noted
then the conservation of moemtnum and copnservation of ennergy laws can be verified
