CONCEPTS. YOU DO NOT NEED TO SHOW YOUR WORK 4. A wire, connected to a battery and switch, passes through the center of a long current-carrying solenoid as shown in the drawing. When the switch is closed and there is a current in the wire, what happens to the portion of the wire that runs inside of the solenoid? A) There is no effect on the wire. B) The wire is pushed downward. C) The wire is pushed upward. D) The wire is pushed into the plane of the paper E) The wire is pushed out of the plane of the paper. Which one of the following statements concerning permanent magnets is FALSE? A) The north pole of a permanent magnet is attracted to a south pole. B) All permanent magnets are surrounded by a magnetic field C) The direction of a magnetic field is indicated by the north pole of a compass. D) Magnetic field lines outside a permanent magnet originate from the north pole and end on the south pole E) When a permanent magnet is cut in half, one piece will be a north pole and one piece will be a south pole s. 6. A metal ring is dropped from rest below a bar magnet that is fixed in position as suggested in the figure. An observer views the ring from below. Which one stabceary bar magaet of the following statements concerning this situation is true? A) As the ring fals, an induced current will flow counterclockwise as viewed by the observer B) As the ring falils, an induced current will flow clockwise as viewed by the observer c) As the ring falls, there wil be an induced magnetic field around the ring that appears counterclockwise as viewed by the observer D) As the ring fals, there will be an induced magnetic field around the ring that appears clockwise as viewed by the observer E) Since the magnet is stationary, there will be no induced current in the ring. Explanation / Answer

4)

Ans: (A) There will be no effect.

The current in the solenoid produces a magnetic field with a North and South pole parallel to the solenoid.

If the solenoid is laying an a level table and the solenoid is pointing towards your face, the end of the solenoid pointing towards your face is either a North pole or a south pole depending on the direction of current in the coils of wire of the solenoid.

If a soft iron rod is placed the center of the solenoid, it will become a magnet.

The copper wire with current running parallel to the solenoid has produced a circular magnetic field. Point your thumb on your left hand towards your face, and your fingers coil clockwise. This represents the magnetic field produced by the straight wire.

The magnetic field produce by current flowing around the solenoid is a straight line pointing towards or away from your face, an extension of your thumb.

The magnetic field of the wire is circling around the magnetic field of the solenoid.

No effect!!

5)

Ans: (E)

Because magnetic monopole does not exist; i.e. we cannot separate north and south poles of a magnet to exist independently.
