Topic - Physics for my Child - 11 SENTENCES REQUIRED - TYPED ONLY
Instructions:
Describe the two topics in one paragraph each to your 5th Grader who has no familiarity with physics. You must NOT use physics terms without defining them at a level of explanation a 10 YEAR-OLD will understand. (For this assignment write ONE PARAGRAPHS, with Each written at a college level and with at least five sentences, including a topic sentence and three or more specific, accurate detailed supporting sentences, and a conclusion sentence.)
1) Behavior of Fluids, referring to fluids being composed of countless tiny particles, each of which obeys the physics of objects but because of their number, we instead examine the characteristics of the particles as a group. These bulk properties include pressure, temperature, and volume. For example, describe how pressure changes with force and area, Paraphrase Pascal’s Principle, Aristotle’s Principle, and Bernoulli’s Principle, explain why some things float and others sink (hot-air balloon, submarine, wood, rock, …). OR explain why pressure increases with depth.
2) USE Pascal’s and Archimedes’ Principles to answer the following: (6 SENTENCES MINIMUM)
Superman has cornered Lex Luthor by his factory’s drainage-pipe outlet in a river-carved canyon outside of Metropolis. Lex has offered to go peacefully to jail as long as Superman is able to complete three challenges:
A) Challenge I – Small stone, and boulder - 2 SENTENCES MINIMUM
For the first challenge, Lex demands that Superman use the weight of small stone to lift a boulder. Understanding the principles of fluids, Superman forms a hydraulic jack out of spare pipes, bits of metal, and river water. He places the small stone on the small piston, the boulder on the large piston, and, sure enough, the weight of the small stone raises the boulder sitting on the large piston. Explain how Superman used Pascal’s Principle to succeed.
B) Challenge II – Crushing a can - 2 SENTENCES MINIMUM
Lex hands Superman an empty aluminum bottle, and challenges Superman to crush the bottle without touching it. The man of steel scoops a little water from the river, pours it into the bottle, turns the water to steam using his heat vision, seals the bottle with a cork (without touching it), and waits. After about a minute, the bottle suddenly is crushed. Explain how Superman passed this challenge.
C) Challenge III – The 33 foot (10 m) straw - 2 SENTENCES MINIMUM
Finally, Lex Luthor challenges Superman to place one end of a 33 foot long vertical pipe into the river, fly up to the other end, and draw river water up the tube with his mouth. Unfortunately, even though the Last Son of Krypton can form a perfect vacuum inside his cheeks, he cannot complete this challenge and he must let Lex Luthor go. Explain how Lex was able to foil Superman.
Explanation / Answer
(i)
pressure is directly propotional to force and inversely proportional area of cross section
when force is constant smaller is the area more will be the pressure and
when area is constant more is the force more is the pressure
(ii)
whether an object sinks or floats will depend on its density, if the density of the object is less than density of water then the object will float or if the density of the object is more than density of water then the object will sink
for example ice floats on water because its density is less than that of water
an iron key willl sink in water because density of iron is more than that of water
