Question
P.3-20 from Field and Wave Electromagnetics, Cheng. 4th ed.
How do I solve this problem?
For a), I think v_y(t)=constant, v_x(t)=a*t where a is any real number. This way, on the fluorescent screen, the y coordinate will be constant and x coordinate will be all over the screen, thus drawing a straight line; I wonder if this is a correct solution. and also need some help with b), c), d).
The deflection system of a cathode-ray oscilloscope usually consists of two pairs of parallel plates producing orthogonal electric fields. Assume the presence of another set of plates in Fig. vx(and vy()are applied to produce Ex and Ey, respectively. Determine the types of waveforms that vx(t)and vyt(t)should have if the electrons are to trace the following graphs on the fluorescent Screen: a) a horizontal line, b) a straight line having a negative unity slope c) a circle, d) two cycles of a sine wave.Explanation / Answer
a) is correct
b)you have a-ve slop in y direction hence
v_y(t) = -bt and v-x(t) = at
c) circle
v_x(t) = r Cos(t) and V-y(t) = rsin(t) so that
x^2 + y^2 = r^2 and it traces a circle.
d) V-y(t) = aSin(2t) V-x(t) = a*t
