Question

5. You are located in Hawali, where the Earth's magnetic field in Hawali runs exactly parallel to the ground, and has a strength of 080 G(Thought question: which direction does it point?) DC current of strength /flows through the straight rod a.(I pts.) In what geographical direction should you orient the rod so that the magnetic force on the rod will he as You also have a rigid but lightweight straight metal rod that is 13 m long, with a total mass of 950 g A large as possible? Explain/justify your answer. Use a sketch. b. (3 pts.) what is the minimum strength of current necessary to just barely cause the rod to levitate Ge. counteract its downward weight with upward magnetic force)? Show your work.

Explanation / Answer

5)Given,

Bx = 0.8 G = 8 x 10^-5 T

L = 1.5 m ; m = 950 g = 0.95 kg

a)We can model the rod as a wire. The magnetic force on a wire is given by:

F = B I L sin(theta)

The maximum value of sin(theta) is when theta = 90 deg

So we will align the rod in perpendicular to the B field (ground) to get the maximum magnetic force on the rod.

b)For the rod to levitate, the magnetic force should balance the gravitational force. So

Fm = Fg

B I L = m g

I = mg/BL = 0.95 x 9.81/8 x 10^-5 x 1.5 = 77662.5 A

Hence, I = 7.77 x 10^4 A
