Explanation / Answer

Given,

m = 20 g ; K = 25 N/m ; d = 1.25 m ; x = 10 m ; D =0.96 m ; h = 1 m

Let u be the required coefficient of friction

from eqn of motion

S = ut + 1/2 at^2

t = sqrt (2S/a)

this is when, u = 0 ; s = h = 1 m ; a = g = 9.81 m/s^2

t = sqrt (2 x 1/9.81) = 0.452 s

We know that

v = D/t = 0.96/0.452 = 2.13 m/s

from conservation of energy

KE = PE(spring) - Wf

where Wf is the work done against frictional forces

1/2 m v^2 = 1/2 k x^2 - u mg d

u = (k x^2 - mv^2)/2 m g d

u = (25 x 0.1^2 - 0.02 x 2.13^2)/ 2 x 0.02 x 9.81 x 1.25 = 0.325

Hence, u = 0.325
