(1796) Problem 6: A charged particle travels through a small hole in plate A and then towards plate B. There is a uniform electric field between the plates. ©theexpertta.com > 33% Part (a) The particle is a proton. The field slows down the proton without deflecting it. What is the direction of the electric field? Choose the best answer 33% Part (c) The field is pointing from A to B and the particle speeds up without being deflected. What kind of particle could it be?? Choose the best answer.

Explanation / Answer

a) The electric field will be towards the Left

force on a charge due to field is F=q*E , since the proton deaccelerates, so force is negative, which means field is negative. ie opposite to the direction of motion of proton.

b) The electric field will be towards the right

( since my electron is slowing down, so the opposite plate should be negatively charged to repel and slow down the electron)

now direction of field is always away from positive particle and towards negative hence towards right.

c) the particle is being accelerated. this field is possible if A is positively charged and B is negatively charged.

now if a proton is put in fieeld, A will repel and B will attract and hence a net acceleration will be experienced.

hence answer is proton.
