Question

, cole secure I https://www.webasagr.net/websiudentAssignment- Two objects with masses of 2.50 kg and 5.70 kg are connected by a ight string that passes over a light frictionless puiley to form an Atwood machine, as in Figure 5.16 Figure 5. 14a (a) Determine the tension in the string. (b) Determine the acceleration of each object. m/s? upwards (2.50 kg mass) m/s2 downwards (5.70 kg mass) (c) Determine the distance each object will move in the first second of motion it they start from rest m (2.50 kg mass) m (5.70 kg mass)

Explanation / Answer

For 5.7 kg object:

mg - T = ma

=> T = m[g - a] = 5.7[9.8 - a]

for 2.5 kg object:

T - Mg = Ma

=> T = M[g + a] = 2.5[9.8 + a]

substitute tension T from above.

5.7[9.8 - a] = 2.5[9.8 + a]

=> 55.86 - 5.7a = 24.5 + 2.5a

=> a = 3.8244 m/s2

this acceleration will be upwards for 2.5 kg and downwards for 5.7 kg [answers to (b)]

Therefore, Tension, T = 2.5[9.8 + 3.8244] = 34.061 N.

c] Use

S = ut + (1/2)at2

u = 0 m/s and t = 1s

therefore, S = (1/2)(3.8244)(1)2 = 1.9122 m [answer to (c)]

this distance will be same for both the masses.
