Question
Problem 2 Learning Goal Comparing the resistance of a thick braided wire to the resistance of a thin single wire. Part A A long conducting wire of length L and resistance R is cut into 5 equal lengths. The 5 sections are then joined at the ends to form a braided conductor of length L/5. As an example, one end of a braided wire formed from a wire cut into 7 pieces is shown in the figure below (this is just for the purposes of visualization; it does not necessarily represent the problem). What fraction of R is the resistance of the braided conductor? Express your answer to three significant figures. Hints Hint 1. Consider how changes in the the geometric parameters of a wire (e.g. length) affect the resistance of a wire.Explanation / Answer
We know that Resistance R = rho*L/A
The new length becomes L/5, and area becomes 5A,
New resistance = ( rho*L/5) /5A
= R/25
= 0.04 R
