Question
u=vo + at 2 1. (25 Points) An exceptional standing jump would raise a person's center of mass 0.80 m off the ground. a) (9 pts) To do this, what velocity must a 68-kg person have when leaving the ground? Assume gravity g = 9.8 m/s2. b) (6 pts) How long would the person be in the air? c) (5 pts) Using the velocity calculated in part a) above and all other things being equal, how long would the person be in the air if he weighed 50-kg? d) (5 pts) Using the velocity calculated in part a) above and all other things being equal, how long would a 50-kg person be in the air if he was on the moon with gravity = 1.6 m/s Show your work. State any assumptions 2Explanation / Answer
a) height jumped (h) = 0.8 m
acceleration due to gravity (g) = 9.8 m/s2
final vecolity at the top most point will be zero so v = 0
h = u2/2g
so 0.8 = u2/(2*9.8)
so u2 = 0.8*9.8*2 = 15.68
so u = 3.96 m/s
b) time spent in air (t) = 2u/g
t = 2*3.96 / 9.8 = 0.8 s
t = 0.8 s
c) since time spent in air is independent of mass so still time spent will be 0.8 s
d) in moon acceleration due to gravity (gmoon) = 1.6 m/s2
time spent in air (t) = 2u/gmoon
t = 2*3.96/1.6 = 4.95 s
t = 4.95 s
