Question
Children normally start to walk at around 12 months old and start to jump at around 24 months old. A daredevil toddler takes a running start and jumps over a line-up of toys cars, takin off with a velocity of 2.5 m/s at an angle of 20 deg above the horizontal. Determine how high above the take-off point he will get at the highest point of the jump (i.e., the upward vertical displacements) and how far he will travel horizontally (i.e., the horizontal displacement). Assume take-off and landing are the same height.
How high will he jump (upward vertical displacement)?
How far will he jump (horizontal displacement)?
Explanation / Answer
u = 2.5
angle = 20 degree
At maximum height the vertical velocity will be 0
Hence,
uy = 2.5sin(20)
vy^2 = uy^2 + 2as
0 = (2.5sin(20) )^2 + 2*(-9.8)*sy
sy = 0.0373 m
Time taken to reach the maximum height :
v = u + at
0 = 2.5sin(20) + (-9.8)*t
t = 0.08725
Total time of jump = 2*t = 0.1745 sec
sx = ux*(2*t)
sx = 2.5cos(20)*0.1745
sx = 0.41 m
