Question

Question 5 1 pts When p-type and n-type semiconductors are placed in contact, the resulting material is known as diode. Which of the following statements are true? The material conduct current regardless of the direction of applied voltage. The material conducts current when a forward bias is applied, but only after a threshold. The material conducts a small current when a reverse bias is applied. A depletion region with no carriers forms at the interface between the two materials. Light is continuously emitted from the depletion region.

Explanation / Answer

Option 1 is correct.

A pn junction diode is formed by doping with n and p type impurities in adjacection sections of intrensic semiconductor. This junction formation results in sharp gradients of current densities across the junction.. These gradients cause electrons and holes to move across the junction leaving behind ionized atonms at the junction. This results in the built up of a small electric field at the junction which is also called as built in potential.

When we just place two n and p type materials in contact the above process does not occur so no built potential will be formed so it cannot work as a diode. It is similar to connnecting two extrensic semiconductors in series. So these n and p type semiconductors will conduct current regardless of the directioon of appiled voltage.
