Name (10) 5. A mechanical engineering student at WNE has mounted a single 120-0hm strain gage on a soda can and has soldered 2 wires to the strain gage. He uses a Multi-meter and measures the resistance between the 2 wires. a) If the voltmeter displays a resistance of 0 ohm, what is your conclusion? Is the gage bad or something wrong with soldering? b) If the voltmeter displays a resistance of infinity, what is your conclusion in this case? c) If the voltmeter displays a resistance of 120 Ohm, can you conclude for sure that the gage is going to function properly?

A)

The more likely explanation is that the soldered wires might have touched the can and now, when the voltage is being measured, the current from the meter runs through the metal can and not the gage. This could make the resistance show up as zero.

B)

If it shows infinity, then there is a break in the circuit. The circuit is made up of the gage, the wires and the voltmeter. If there is a circuit break in the gage or between the gage and the wire due to improper soldering, there is an air gap tht gets formed and it's resistance is practically infinite.

C)

SInce the resistance is shown perfectly, the gage should probably work just fine. But we cannot conclude that it is going to work properly as we never tested the dynamic characteristics of it. We have simply seen that the initial value is zero (and have not tested how it would increae or decrease with strain).
