Question

1.If you were going to design an airspeed system with no errors, what would it look like? How would you eliminate the errors?

2. Compare and contrast the methods of measuring aerodynamic forces in a wind tunnel to that of an airplane in flight.

3. Compare and contrast an aircraft having a high aspect ratio wing to an aircraft that has a low aspect wing. What are the operational requirements that drive these designs? All things being equal, which aircraft will--in principle--have longer endurance and why? Which aircraft will lose more energy in flight under elevated G and why?

Explanation / Answer

Problem 1)

The ideal airspeed system will display the true airspeed accurately and reliably. A good system will include redundant devices to ensure the accurate airspeed will always be available during various types of incidents. Pitot tubes have contributed to many different scenarios where the airspeed of an aircraft was incorrectly displayed, sometimes without the crew even aware.

The new solid state system have redundant receivers, transmitters, and also utilize a traditional air pressure system as a back-up. Using modern technology that incorporates GPS will give aviators precise airspeed indications world-wide.

Problem 2)

In a wind tunnel an aircraft is not exposed to external forces that are not controlled by the operators. Forces can be measured multiple ways, such as using smoke or colored fluid to observe the motion of the fluid around a body. In a wind tunnel, as well as in actual flight, pitot tubes placed in certain locations on an aircraft can be used to determine various parameters at that location. testing in a wind tunnel will provide a more controlled experiment , the aircraft may react differently in flight with loads and other forces applied to it.
