Question
1) A8kg ball is traveling east at 60 m/s. What is the magnitude of the ball's momentum? 2) A small car and a large truck traveling at the same speed collide head-on and stick together. Which vehicle experiences the larger change in the magnitude of its momentum if the collision is a) perfectly inelastic? Explain. b) perfectly elastic? Explain. 3) Two equal mass bullets traveling with the same speed strike a target (in separate experiments). One of the bullets is made of rubber and bounces off, the other is metal and penetrates, coming to rest in the block. Which exerts the greater impulse on the target? Explain. 4) In a one dimensional motion experiment, a 1.5 kg ball is bounced against a wall, traveling +30 m/s just before and -30 m/s just after the collision. What was the impulse that the wall exerted on the ball? A gym teacher, Mr. Chambers, throws (v = 20 m/s) a basketball"(m = 0.65 kg) at a friend standing in front on you because your friend was talking when he should be silent. (Your friend ducks because he was paying enough attention, but you get hit because you were silently not paying attention.2) (This next part is made up.) Mr. Chambers then offers your friend a choice. Mr. C will throw a medicine ball (m = 8 kg) at the friend, and the friend must catch it or be pummeled (beaten) by the entire class. Your friend must choose to have the medicine ball thrown with the same kinetic energy as the basketball, the same momentum as the basketball, or the same velocity as the basketball. If your friend wants to avoid further abuse, which should he choose? Explain. 5)Explanation / Answer
1)Given,
m = 8 kg ; v = 60 m/s
The momentum will be:
P = m v = 8 x 60 = 480 kg-m/s
Hence, P = 480 kg-m/s
3)The one made of metal will exert a greater impulse. Since impulse is:
J = F x t and J = m (v2 - v1)
So the change of momentum will occur more in case of metal ball.
4)from the defination of impulse
J = m (v2 - v1)
J = 1.5 (30 - (-30)) = 90 kg-m/s
Hence, J = 90 kg-m/s
