Question

You are working with a team of neuroscientists and a snapshot of data has been collected and summarized in the accompanying schematic. The Principal Investigator asks you to determine the amount of current running through the battery (assumed to have negligible internal resistance). What value do you obtain and how do you convince her that your result makes perfect sense (you would not want her to be NERVE-ous)?

Explanation / Answer

This is an example of "balanced wheatstone bridge". Thus no current will flow through middle resistors. Total circuit reduces to (2R) P (2R) P (2R). Where "P" represents parallel connection.

Thus equivalent resistance = 2R/3.

Current = V/(eq. Resistance0 = (3V) / (2R)
