1). Taking valproic acid during the pregnancy increase the risk of developing neural tube defects by 1% or 2%. These children are more likely to suffer from low IQ and autism. This occurs because the valproate decreases the folic acid levels. To prevent this side effect, all the valproic acid using women of childbearing age and those that are planning to conceive must take a high dose folic acid (5 mg/day) throughout the dosage period.
