Question
1. A mirror has a radius of curvature of 24 cm. mirror is convex. You look at the reflection of your eye, while holding the mirror 100 cm from your eye.
(a) Estimate the diameter of the iris of your eye.
(b) How far from the mirror is the image of your eye?
(c) What is the diameter of the image of the iris of your eye?
(d) What are the characteristics of the image? Be sure to justify your answers. That is, is the image:
(i) real or virutal? ,(ii) upright or inverted? ,(iii) enlarged or reduced?
2. That an object is 9 cm tall produces an image on a screen that is 3 cm tall. The distance from the object to the screen is100 cm.
(a) What are the characteristics of the image? Be sure to justify your answers. That is, is the image:
(i) real or virutal? ,(ii) upright or inverted? , (iii) enlarged or reduced?
(b) What is the distance from the lens to the object?
(c) What is the focal length of the lens?
Explanation / Answer
As per the Chegg user policy, I am not allowed to answer more than one question per post. Please see my comment above. I will answer number 1 below (Plus, number 2 makes no sense, I think you have typed it incorrectly)
Number 1)
Part A) The iris of the human eye is generally accepted to be 12 mm in diameter
Part B)
Apply 1/f = 1/p + 1/q
f = half of the radius of curvature, and its negative since the mirror is convex
f = -12 cm
1/-12 = 1/100 + 1/q
q = -10.7 cm
Part C)
Apply h'/h = -q/p
h'/12 = -(-10.7)/100
h' = 1.29 mm
Part D)
The image is virtual since the image distance is negative
The image is upright since the image distance is negative
The image is reduced since 1.29 mm is small than 12 mm
