Question

You don't need to solve this problem, as it's already solved, I just want to know why can't use the small angle approximation given that

L>>>>d

and

d>>>>>lambda

??

Thanks in advance.

The emission spectrum of hydrogen gas includes a red line at 656 nm and a blue line at 434 nm. A collimated beam of light emitted by hydrogen is incident on a diffraction grating with 4500 grooves/cm. What are the angles at which the two wavelengths are diffracted to form the second order diffraction maxima? What is the separation in cm between the two maxima of part [a] on a vertical screen placed 50.0 cm away from the grating?

Explanation / Answer

hi,

please see that if u are going to use small angle approximation there will be a small variation in the answer. So u can also go for it.

-->in the first part if u use small angle approximation then answer will be around 34degree .This is a solved problem so dont worry.

And in the theta2 if u use small angle approximation then answer will be around 22.35degree which is very close to the answer.
