Question

Jane is a 55 year old female who has been followed for over a year by her general physician with symptoms that have included progressive weakness and paresthesia in her left upper extremity. She has had an MR and xrays of her cervical spine, she has also had an EMG of her upper extremity and spine. All these tests have come back negative for change in structure. At her most recent visit her doctor noticed that her deep tendon reflex for her biceps and brachioradialis were increased and that she seemed to have a slight droop on the left side of her mouth. Her physician referred her to a neurologist. What test do you think the neurologist will order after his initial visit with Jane. Explain why he would order the test.

Explanation / Answer

Neurologist might order for an MRI of upper extremity. This test can be ordered to diagnose abnormality, if any in the nerves supplying the upper region, that might be producing these symptoms.
