Question
PROBLEM 1 (50 Points) A reactant A and catalyst B are used in a chemical process. The client wants to know if there an optimal combination of A and B that maximized the vield. The reactant A concentration varies from 15% to 25%, while the amount of catalyst varies from 1 pound to 2 pounds. 60 90 100 80 15% 25% Reactant A Concentration (a)What combination of reactant A concentrations and catalyst B experiments would you recommend for the client? (b) Calculate the main effects (c)Are there any interaction effects - justify your conclusion (a) Compute the regression model for the above experimentExplanation / Answer
a)Since we know by increasing the amount if reactant increase the rate of reaction hence we should prefer higher percentage of A .
Secondly , by increasing the surface provided by a catalyst increases the yield of product so we should prefer higher dose of catalyst too as it willl increase the chance of maximum interaction of reactants with the catalyst at the same time and no other reactants have to wait for their turn because of the excess space provided by the catalyst.
So , we should prefer 25% of A and 2 pounds of B.
b)By providing large amount of catalyst increases the chance of interaction of maximum reactants wuth it at thevsane time and also by the use of it , barriers in a chemical reaction will also get minimised which we also call as activation energy of a chemical reaction.Due to this , rate of the reaction will significantly increase relative to the lesser amount of catalyst or uncatalysed recation.
C) Yes there are interaction effects as when we are increasing amount if catalyst , there is more probability that reactants will react with it and other reactants may too take part in the chemical reaction due to the large space provided by catalyst at the sane time. This will not onky increase the rate of chemical reaction but also maximum yield of product is also there.
d)If we take only 15% of A and 1 pound of B , then yield of product will not be much due to the fact that we used lesser amount if A and lesser amount of catalyst which may even conclude to a slow process.
However , if we increase the amount of B but making A constant with onky 15% ,then the results will again be the same and we will get the same amount of product but tgis time a little faster as we used more space to for reactants to interact with catalyst at the same time.
But now , if we also increase the amount of A too , not only we will get our required product fast but also with the highest yield as this time we used 25% of A and 2 pounds of B.
