Question
A. A helical pinion with 18 teeth is turning a gear with 41 teeth (P-12). The pinion is delivering 2 hp at 1200 rpm. If the helix angle is 15 degrees, the axial force on the shaft would be: (a) 37.513 Ilbs (b) 140.000 lbs (c) 61.463 lbs (d) 16.469 Ibs Is A but I don't know how to get the right answer B. A 20 degree pressure angle spur gear and pinion are running in mesh. The pinion has 150 in-lbs of torque turning at 300 rpm and a pitch diameter of 3.0 in. If the velocity ratio is 4.5, the force pushing the gears apart would be: (a) 31.251 lbs (b) 40.352 lbs (c) 36.397 lbs (d) 40.187 lbs Is C but I don't know how to get the right answer.Explanation / Answer
PROBLEM-A:
Given data:
No. of teeth on the pinion, Z=18
Diametral Pitch, Pd=12 in.
Power delivered by the pinion, P= 2 HP
Speed, N=1200 rpm
Torque, T= (63000*Power)/ Speed
= (63000*2)/1200
= 105 lb-in.
Pitch circle diameter, d = Z/Pd
= 18/12 =1.5 in.
Axial Force on the shaft, F= (2*T)/d
= (2*105)/1.5
= 140 lbs.
PROBLEM-B:
Torque, T=150 in-lbs
pitch diameter, d= 3 in.
Transmitted Force, F= (2*T)/d
Separating Force, Fs= F* Tan(pressure angle)
